Conversation with John 3/5/23
John called today to share a story about dad.
He said he had gone back to work with Dad after working at Kroll Electric. They left the house and mom had made sandwiches for their lunch. Mom had made John's with mustard and dad's without. When they stopped for lunch they got out their sandwiches and take took a bite. "Oh damn! She put mustard on my sandwich!" John looked at his and it didn't have mustard on it. He told dad they could just switch and he would eat the one with mustard. Then as John was contemplating he asked dad, "Why don't you like mustard?" Dad replied, "Well we had gone down to Campbellton, FL where Granddaddy Davis had a farm for a family get together. We had to leave real early, about 4:00am, so we could get there before lunch. There weren't many roads and they were all dirt roads so it took a long time. When we got there we began to eat. Someone had made potato salad with mustard in it. I had eaten some. After lunch I was playing around and watching the goats. Granddaddy Davis gave me a goat. So when we packed up we put the goat in a sack and put it in the back seat and headed out. On the way back home I got really sick and had to throw up several times. The mustard caused me to be sick! So I've never liked mustard since." Johnny said he wondered if Dad had ever given any thought that having a smelly goat in a sack in the backseat with him might have contributed to him being sick!
We also talked about Grandmother Joyner. John said Grandmother Joyner got a lot better in her older years. She was quite a drunk, achoholic, for many years. John shared a story of a time when Grandmother was staying with Mom and Dad and she went to church at the New Harmony Baptist Church. While in the "old ladies" class, the other ladies were talking about the things they've sewn and about other people. Grandmother just blurted out, " I came to talk about Jesus and learn about him. I don't come to church to talk about other people." The other ladies quickly turned to talking about the lesson.
